Critical Thinking and Authentic Assessment - Help Wanted for NTF Project
I am leading an international project funded by the NTF scheme looking at the development of critical thinking and critical appraisal skills in students using online resources and developing an authentic assessment artefact (www.aacts.ac.uk). The project already involves colleagues in the UK, Australia, the Netherlands and the USA, but we are looking for further input.
Part of the project requires us to identify students perceptions of assessment and also which online tools they use in preparing for these. We would be grateful if you would ask your studens to complete the online questionnaire. They can use this link (http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/AACTS2011), or they can go to the project website and click the link on the latest news page.
We also want your help. We want to get a wide disciplinary range of views on the meaning of critical thinking and the skills involved. We are particularly interested in the terms and phraseology used by the different disciplines. So please spare a few minutes and complete the questionnaire here. The outcomes will be freely available on the project website.
Finally, we are looking for further collaborators who may be interested in trialling the tool and pedagogy being developed by the project in the third year of the study (2012-2013). Please get in touch if you are interested by emailing AACTs project
Call for contributions to the 2012 symposium
Each year we organise a symposium for the members of the Association. Its an opportunity to meet and reinvigorate your passion for learning and teaching with like minded people. You can talk about your work, develop collaborations and share ideas. It also an opportunity to work with others and identify areas on which the Association should be focusing.
The Fellows find this a really rewarding experience, giving them the opportunity to put names to faces and to build their networks. It is attended by Fellows from across the years and many of the 'older Fellows' are able to support others in their career progression.
In 2012, the symposium being held in York on May 14th and 15th. This year we are asking Fellows to contribute £50 towards the cost of the dinner and venue hire and unfortunately, we are limited on numbers so it will be first come, first served. As always it will be supported by the HEA.
We will be asking for posters and contribution but the full agenda will be circulated shortly You can tell us your ideas through our new Blogsite and Forum. Either click here or use the links at the top or the page.
International Collaboration
Useful preliminary discussions have been held with the 3Ms Fellows in Canada, Carnegie Scholars in the USA and Fellows in Australia and New Zealand with a view to establishing closer links with a number of international networks to try and multiply the impact of those who are passionate about learning and teaching. You can learn more through our blog
Blog site and Forum

Then you can see and join the conversations, contribute ideas for the website etc. During these challenging times, we hope this community will provide you with support and opportunities, so what are you waiting for??!
2011 National Teaching Fellows join the Committee.
We had a wonderful, enthusiastic response from 2011 Fellows for co-option to the committee. Lots of enthusiasm for the idea of giving back something in return for this award we have all been given. We have exciting plans to do this in collaboration with our international colleagues and I hope the 211 co-optees will bring new ideas and fresh enthusiasm to the committee. The new members are:
Gordon Ramsay; Heather Skinner; Ruth Dineen; Ian Scott.
